"Hunting For A Cure With Care"
LAC Training has launched it 2010 'It's for Charity' campaign to help raise money and awareness for The Huntington's Disease Association.
What is Huntington's?

The Huntington's Disease Association (HDA) is a registered charity that exists to support families whose lives are affected by Huntington's disease (HD). The HDA was founded in 1971 as a self-help group with 76 members to support families and individuals affected by Huntington's disease. It was then known as The Association to Combat Huntington's Chorea. Families at that time lived in complete isolation, unaware of the extent of the disease in the community stigmatised by its hereditary nature. They were further isolated by the manifestation of the disease itself characterised by severe physical, emotional and behavioural problems.

The Association continues to strive to raise awareness of HD with the general public and with professionals, so families and professionals can obtain help, understanding, advice and information. Through our network of trained Regional Care Advisor's we help to equip those affected, directly or indirectly, by Huntington's disease, their families and carers, with support, guidance, care and advice to ensure they receive the best possible care package. As well as those diagnosed with HD, we offer care to the carers, often spouses or children, who are sometimes forgotten, yet they play a vital role in keeping the family together. The Regional Care Advisory service is available five days a week, 52 weeks a year (except bank holidays).

Huntington's disease is a progressive degenerative neurological disorder causing a steady decline of people's physical, emotional and cognitive skills. It is a genetic illness and every child born to a parent carrying the Huntington's gene has a 50% risk of inheriting the gene and going on to develop the illness at some stage in their life. It affects both males and females equally, the onset of the symptoms are usually in the prime of a person's life between the ages of 30-55, although there is a juvenile form of the illness and people have been known to develop the illness later in life. According to the office of health economics up to 50,000 people in Britain are affected by the ravages of the disease with around 6,000-10,000 sufferers in the UK at any one time. As yet there is no known cure for Huntington's disease.
